Meet the Team

We are a General Medical Services (GMS) partnership practice situation in Ruabon. We currently have just over 8,500 patients on our practice list. The surgery was previously run by Health Board as a BCUHB (Betsi Cadwaladr) Managed Practice and was transferred to GMS partnership on 1st February 2021.

Your Healthcare Professionals

Take a look below at the range of Healthcare Professionals that are available at Ruabon Medical Centre, as this may also help you when requesting an appointment.

GP / Doctor

GPs will care for patients with more complex needs. They can perform all necessary examinations, make referrals to specialists and arrange hospital admission if needed. They also work with the other healthcare professionals, providing support and advice when needed.

Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)

An ANP is a highly qualified Nurse, able to deal with lots of medical conditions previously managed by a GP. Some ANP’s can also prescribe. They can perform some examinations, make referrals and admit to hospital. We have an ANP who is a Paediatric Specialist ANP at the surgery to see all children face to face (details below). Please note: they cannot provide ‘Fit Notes’ for work.

Paediatric Specialist Advanced Nurse Practitioner

An Paediatric Specialist Advanced Nurse Practitioner is a highly qualified paediatric Nurse, able to deal with lots of child medical conditions previously managed by a GP. Some ANP’s can also prescribe. They can perform some examinations, make referrals and admit to hospital. Please note: they cannot provide ‘Fit Notes’ for work.

Pharmacist

The Pharmacist is the expert on all medication related issues and is also able to manage a range of medical conditions. We also have a full-time Pharmacy Technician who assists our Pharmacist with medicines management and forms part of our medicines management team.
You may be invited to attend a Medication Review with the Pharmacist supporting your Surgery.

Practice Nurse

Practice Nurses provide a range of appointments, including the routine care of long-term conditions, such as diabetes and COPD, as well as seasonal (flu) vaccinations. Ruabon Medical Centre Nurses have different expertise and some can prescribe. If you are not sure who you need to see please ask at the centre.

Healthcare Assistant (HCA)

HCA can check blood pressure, take blood samples and measure height and weight, during acute illness or as part of managing your long-term condition. They cannot prescribe. The HCA reports any abnormal findings to a GP to see if any action is required.

Allied Health Professional

An Allied Health Professional (AHP) includes Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Practitioners, Visiting Teams such as CAMHS (Child & Adolescent Mental Health Team), Prescribed Medicines Team, Chiropodists and other health care professionals. Mental Health Nurse Practitioners are able to deal with patients presenting with mental health and learning disability conditions. 

Our ACP (Advanced Clinical Practitioner) Mental Health Nurse can also prescribe.  They are available to see the patient as a first point of contact and can work with patients to treat and deal with their mental health and learning disabilities.  They can refer and signpost to other services and are an excellent support to the GP’s.  They will manage their caseload and reduce referrals into secondary care to try and keep the patient treatment within primary care and the GP surgery.


Home Visit Team

Our home visiting team can consist of an Advanced Nurse Practitioner or a Paramedic as well as our GPs.

When you contact us to book an appointment the receptionist may ask you some brief information about your request. By knowing a little bit about your needs they will be able to find you the best appointment option with the most suitable clinician. This is important to us because it gives you a better experience, and because we pride ourselves in getting things right first time.

Our receptionists work to the same standards of confidentiality as our doctors and other clinicians, but we understand that not everyone is comfortable sharing additional information when booking an appointment. That is absolutely fine and you do not need to share this information if you would rather not. In this situation the receptionist will still do their best to help you find a suitable appointment, or they may arrange for you to speak to a more senior member of the team who can help.
