COVID AND FLU VACCINATIONS OCTOBER 2022 (29/09/2022)

Ruabon Medical Centre will be taking part in the role out of the Covid-19 Booster Vaccination Programme for our patients and our first clinic will be held on Saturday 8th October where you will also be able to have your flu vaccination as well. Letters are going to be sent out to our high risk patients first for both vaccines to attend Ruabon and we are looking to send to our over 65s and at risk group first to ensure we get those patients vaccinated quickly. We shall then be moving down age groups to get all of our over 50s vaccinated if possible. Please can our over 65s and at risk group patients (those with chronic disease such as diabetes, etcetera who usually receive a flu jab) bear with us and please attend the surgery for your vaccinations as we are making every effort to try and get our patients vaccinated for protection from Covid-19 and Influenza (Flu) before mid to end of November. Please don’t contact the surgery as BCUHB shall be sending letters out to the patient groups and your appointment will be booked for you to attend Ruabon Medical Centre on the date and time provided and this will be for both vaccines Covid-19 and Influenza. If you only want one vaccine please still attend your appointment as we shall be checking if you want both or just one. Only if you don’t want the vaccine or cannot attend your appointment can you then contact the surgery via email Enquiries.W91043@wales.nhs.uk thank you so much. We look forward to seeing you all soon and getting you protected ready for winter. Have a great bank holiday. Stay well and keep safe.

Thank you from the Partners and Staff at Ruabon Medical Centre

COVID-19 UPDATE FROM DR NICK LYONS, EXECUTIVE MEDICAL DIRECTOR, BCUHB 21/12/2021

Vaccination Update

From Dr Nick Lyons – Executive Medical Director

Over the last week we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of COVID-19 vaccines given out across North Wales.Last week we administered a record 66,000 jabs including 24,000 over the weekend alone.

In the next few days our vaccination programme will ramp up even further as we aim to administer around 18,000 COVID-19 vaccines every day. Getting booster jabs into the arms of all eligible adults over the next 10 days is critical to protect each other and NHS services from the tidal wave of Omicron cases coming our way in January.

I urge people to book online or attend one of our designated drop in clinics as soon as they can this week – don’t leave it until after Christmas – we have staff ready to vaccinate you. Getting your booster is the best Christmas present you can give yourself. The sooner you come forward, the sooner you will build your immunity. We will have significantly reduced capacity to deliver jabs during January – so its vital that you come forward as soon as possible.

We’ve reluctantly taken the very difficult decision to postpone non-urgent operations, procedures and outpatient appointments and pause non-essential services to allow staff to be released to support the vaccination campaign. Many of our staff have voluntarily given up planned time off with their families over the festive period to ensure that we can meet this huge challenge.

We are pulling out all the stops to make booster jabs available. Please make getting your booster a priority and come forward as soon as you possibly can.

Online booking is the best way to secure your jab and reduce queuing

Tens of thousands more appointments will be released on our online booking service in the coming days, as more of our hard working staff join the vaccination programme. Please keep checking our online booking service as new appointments are being released in batches.

It is critical that if you have a booked appointment in December you keep to it. Don’t contact us to rearrange as this slows down our efforts to protect others. You will be waiting until January for an alternative.

Booking online helps guarantee that you will receive your jab and reduces the time you have to queue. If you turn up at a clinic which isn’t a designated drop in and you haven’t booked an appointment online, you will face a lengthy queue and may be turned away. We will only be able to offer you a jab if we are running ahead of schedule and have sufficient vaccine supply and staffing.

Those who book ahead using our online booking service will always be prioritised in queues.

Drop in clinics

We’re continuing to publicise designated drop in and ‘pop up’ mobile clinics online. Depending on take up of appointments using our online booking service, we may open additional drop ins at specific sites. Details of these may be communicated at short notice online.

Appeal to pregnant women

We are once again appealing to pregnant women to come forward for their COVID-19 vaccine. For any mother to be, getting their first, second and booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is one of the most important things they can do to protect themselves and their unborn baby against coronavirus and, particularly against the new omicron variant.

The number of pregnant women coming forward for their vaccine has been lower than we would like to be in North Wales and across the UK. This places mothers and their babies at risk.

Based on the data about safety, together with the increased risk from COVID-19 the JCVI has advised that pregnant women should be considered as a clinical risk group.

We strongly encourage all mothers to be to book an appointment for their first, second or booster dose using our online booking service as soon as possible.

FLU Jab Delays (BCUHB)

We have been in formed by Health Board and Seqirus that there is a delay in supplies of the flu jab of approximately 1-2 weeks. Ruabon Medical Centre would like to inform all it’s patients that we shall keep you fully informed of any developments and news but for the time being we are unable to book patients in to the clinics until we receive confirmation of delivery and this won’t be until at least 7 days before delivery is planned. This may well be October before we are able to book patients in to clinics now. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

COVID-19 Vaccination Update 07.09.21

From Gill Harris – Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery

Nearly 90 per cent of the eligible population of North Wales have had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 82 per cent have had their second.

We have seen good take up among 16-17-year-olds with almost 10,000 COVID-19 vaccinations administered. To enable further take up across our broad geography we will be deploying our mobile vaccination units to target those aged 16-17, as we are well aware that this age group can find it difficult to travel to vaccination centres because they are more reliant on public transport and lifts from family members.

In support of this we will be working with our local authorities and colleges across the region over the coming weeks.

We’d like to remind all those eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine that it’s quick and easy to book your first or second dose using our online booking service or by attending one of our walk in sessions, for which appointments are not required.

COVID-19 vaccine booster

We are still awaiting final advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) on the scope of the COVID-19 booster programme.

We ask those who are likely to be eligible based on the JCVI’s interim advice to please be patient and remember that there is no need to contact us to book an appointment. You will be contacted directly when it is your turn.

Due to the way in which the COVID-19 and Flu vaccinations are delivered and the expected start dates for the respective campaigns, it will not be standard practice to give people these jabs at the same time.

Anti-vaccine mood hardening?

In last week’s COVID-19 vaccination update we provided an overview of the lengths our staff have gone to in order to ensure that people have the opportunity to be vaccinated. We cited the efforts of our COVID-19 Vaccination Contact Centre staff, who attempted to contact around 1,500 people over the Bank Holiday weekend, leading to 111 booked vaccination appointments.

This was reported by some of our local media as evidence of ‘anti-vaccine mood hardening’ across the region. However, this is simply not borne out by the evidence.

Almost 60 per cent of the 1,500 phone calls made by our staff went unanswered, while over half of those we managed to speak to said they had already been vaccinated, had an appointment booked, or planned to book online.

Appointments were booked for 20 per cent of those we managed to speak to, while just seven per cent said they did not want to be vaccinated.

Recruitment success

Following the success of our recruitment event last month, we’re looking forward to welcoming around 50 additional staff into our vaccination teams in the coming weeks.

In some cases, our new recruits will replace current vaccination staff, who are returning to their substantive roles across the health board.

Further recruitment events may be held in the coming weeks. These will be widely publicised on social media and on our website.

Update from Health Board 10.08.2021

Updates from the Health Board

Vaccination Update

As of today, a total of 983,948 vaccinations have been administered in North Wales.

This means that almost 85 per cent of eligible adults in North Wales have either been fully vaccinated, or are booked in for their second dose in the coming weeks.

More than three quarters of people aged between 18 and 39 have had a first dose of the vaccine, and we are working very hard to encourage further uptake among this group.

Having both jabs reduces your chances of hospitalisation with COVID-19 by over 90 per cent, while protecting you from the debilitating effects of long-COVID. Proof of vaccination is increasingly likely to be required to travel on holiday abroad and attend nightclubs, large festivals, concerts and sporting events – particularly over the border in England.

Advice for those who are undecided about the COVID-19 vaccine

We are asking anyone who has concerns about receiving the vaccine to book an appointment online, or attend one of our walk-in clinics. We will take the time to discuss any concerns they have, so they can make an informed decision about whether to go ahead.

People can also find trusted, up-to-date information on the COVID-19 vaccine on the Public Health Wales website.

COVID-19 vaccine booster programme

Along with the rest of NHS Wales, we have been undertaking detailed planning for a COVID-19 booster campaign, which will begin in September.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine should be given to those who are most vulnerable to serious infection, as there is a likelihood that the immunity provided from having two doses could reduce over time.

Based on the JCVI’s interim advice, we are planning to offer a booster dose to the following groups of people, as part of a two-stage process:

Stage 1:

  • Adults aged 16 and over who are immunosuppressed
  • Those living in residential care homes for older adults
  • All adults aged 70 years or over
  • Adults aged 16 years and over who are considered clinically extremely vulnerable
  • Frontline health and social care workers

Stage 2:

  • All adults aged 50 years and over
  • Adults aged 16 to 49 year who are in an influenza or COVID-19 at-risk group
  • Adult household contacts of immunosuppressed individuals

There is no need for people in these groups to contact us. We will contact those that are eligible when it is their turn.

In order to roll the COVID-19 vaccine booster programme out as quickly and efficiently as possible, we are currently planning where operationally possible for boosters to be administered through a combination of Vaccination Centres, GP surgeries and Community Pharmacies. This is similar to the delivery model used during the initial programme. This mixed approach, which utilises the expertise of our primary care partners, is essential, given the rural nature of many of the communities we serve.

Vaccinating 16 and 17 year olds

This week the JCVI announced new advice that a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine should be offered to 16 and 17-year-olds.

We are now putting plans in place to invite this new group in for their vaccinations and will share more information as soon as possible.

Vaccination Clinics

It’s quick and easy to book a first or second dose jab at a convenient date, time and location using our online booking service.

Please note that new clinics are being arranged on a regular basis and the details listed above can sometimes change at short notice. We have tried a variety of opening times to try and make it as convenient as possible for people to get the vaccine and will continue to do this where there has been demand (such as earlier or later opening times). Changes to existing clinics and details of additional clinics will be shared through our social media channels and those of our partners.

If you cannot access the internet to book online, please phone our COVID-19 Vaccination Contact Centre on 03000 840004. The lines can be very busy, so please be patient.

Update regarding Teens aged 16-17 Years for Pfizer Covid Vaccination – South Wrexham Cluster GP Practices 10.08.2021

Teens aged 16-17 in North Wales urged to come forward for their COVID-19 vaccine

Last week, following updated guidance from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), the Welsh Government announced that Wales’ COVID-19 vaccination programme has been expanded to 16-17-year-olds.

We are now encouraging teenagers aged 16-17 across North Wales to come forward for their first dose by booking in advance using our online service, or attending one of our walk in sessions, for which appointments are not required.

Parental consent to book or receive a first dose jab is not required, but people in this age group may be accompanied by an adult, if they wish to.

The JCVI has said that advice on when to offer the second dose will come later.

Evidence from COVID-19 outbreaks across North Wales shows that people in this age group are at significantly increased risk of catching and transmitting the virus.

We’ve had an incredibly positive uptake of the vaccine among 18-29-year-olds and we are confident that a great majority of 16-17-year-olds will come forward for their jab and play their part in helping us all retain some the freedoms that have been recently restored after COVID-19 restrictions were eased.

We urge any 16-17-year-old who isn’t sure if they want to receive the vaccine to book and attend an appointment, or turn up at any of our walk-in clinics, so we can take the time to discuss the benefits of vaccination and any concerns they may have, before they make a decision on whether to go ahead.

THERE IS A SOUTH WREXHAM DROP IN CLINIC TUESDAY AUGUST 10TH 5-7PM AT PLAS MADOC LEISURE CENTRE,LL14 3HL.

Update from Ruabon Newsletter and Ruabon Medical Centre Support Page (02.08.2021)

First Minister Mark Drakeford and

Minister for Health and Social Services Eluned Morgan

Changes to self-isolation for fully-vaccinated adults

Newid y rheolau hunanynysu ar gyfer oedolion sydd wedi’u brechu’n llawn

All adults who have been fully-vaccinated will no longer have to self-isolate if they are identified as close contacts of someone with coronavirus from 7th August, the First Minister confirmed today.

The changes to the NHS Wales Test Trace Protect (TTP) service for fully-vaccinated adults will come into effect from 7th August – the same day as Wales is expected to move to alert level zero, if the public health situation allows.

Children and young people under 18 will also be exempt from the need to self-isolate if they are also identified as close contacts of a positive case.

But everyone who tests positive for coronavirus or has symptoms must continue to isolate for 10 days, whether they have been vaccinated or not.

The TTP service will use the Welsh Immunisation Service to identify adults who are fully-vaccinated and who will no longer be required to self-isolate if they are identified as close contacts.

From 7 August, instead of instructing fully-vaccinated adults to isolate, contact tracers and advisers will provide them with advice and guidance about how to protect themselves and stay safe.

The TTP service will provide a “warn and inform” service for all fully-vaccinated adults and under-18s, who are identified as close contacts.

Some extra safeguards will be put in place for those working with vulnerable people, particularly health and social care staff, including a risk assessment for staff working in health and care and daily lateral flow tests. Members of the public will be strongly advised not to visit hospitals and care homes for 10 days.

Everyone identified as a contact of a positive case will continue to be advised to have a PCR test on day two and day eight, whether they are fully vaccinated or not.

The changes will help ease the pressure on vital services caused by the recent rapid rise in Covid cases, driven by the delta variant over the last two months.

Cases have risen by 800% since the end of May, when they were at very low levels. Over the last week case rates have started to fall in all parts of Wales.

Almost 80% of adults in Wales have been fully vaccinated – the best rates in the UK and some of the best in the world.

Announcing the changes to the self-isolation rules, First Minister Mark Drakeford said:

“Self-isolation on symptoms or a positive test result continues to be a powerful measure in helping to break the chains of transmission and stop the spread of the virus. It is important we retain this, even for people who have been fully vaccinated.

“But we know a full course of the vaccine offers people protection against the virus and they are far less likely to contract it when they are identified as close contacts. This means they no longer need to self-isolate for 10 days.

“We can remove the need for self-isolation for the two million adults who have completed their vaccine course, helping to keep Wales safe and working.

“We are also removing the need for children and young people under 18 to self-isolate, recognising the impact long periods out of school and college is having on their well-being and education.”

The current system of support payments for people on low incomes who have to self-isolate because they have either tested positive or are a close contact of someone with the virus, will continue.

Health Minister Eluned Morgan added:

“Unfortunately, as the last couple of months have shown, the pandemic is still with us.

“We need everyone’s help to control the spread of coronavirus – everything we do has an impact on this awful virus.

“Removing self-isolation for people who have had a full course of the vaccine is a really positive step forward but it doesn’t mean the end of isolation for all of us. If we want to see the back of coronavirus, we all need to take this virus seriously and isolate on symptoms and get tested.

“It’s also really important everyone takes up the offer of vaccination. It’s never too late to get vaccinated in Wales – clinics are open in every part of the country.”

Notes to editors

People who have completed their full course of the Covid-19 vaccine will no longer be required to self-isolate if they are identified as close contacts of a positive case, so long as 14 days have passed since their last dose of the vaccine. This helps to maximise the benefit of vaccination.

Another message from the Welsh Government

Under-18s invited for their

first COVID-19 vaccine in Wales

Young people who are about to turn 18 are being invited to have their COVID-19 vaccine in Wales.

Following advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) young adults aged from 17 years and 9 months will either be invited to a booked appointment or they can attend a walk-in vaccination clinic where available in their local health board.

It is hoped take-up among this group, who are on the verge of entering the workplace or are about to start university in the autumn, will be high.

Almost 80% of adults in Wales have been fully vaccinated – the best rates in the UK and some of the best in the world.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Vaccines Gill Richardson said:

“This is the next stage of our successful vaccination programme and the first step towards delivering vaccines to children and young people. We will move quickly to vaccinate those aged 12-17 who fall into the categories outlined by the recent JCVI guidance on vaccinating children.”

“Our vaccination programme continues to make outstanding progress, and more than 2 million people in Wales have been fully vaccinated. We are incredibly grateful for the work of all the NHS staff, volunteers and the military who have are making sure no one is left behind.”

The lead-in time before they turn 18 is to ensure a good uptake of the vaccine in newly-turned 18 year olds as they become more mobile and more independent. Many will be entering the workplace or starting University in the autumn term.

The JCVI also advised that children and young people aged 12 years and over with specific underlying health conditions that put them at risk of serious COVID-19, should be offered COVID-19 vaccination.

Health Boards are working to identify and issue invitations for vaccination to children covered by the JCVI advice.

Children and young people aged 12-17 who live with someone – either an adult or child – who are immunosuppressed will also be offered a vaccine to help protect those they live with.  They will be offered the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in the coming weeks.

Minister for Health and Social Services, Eluned Morgan said:

“We welcome the advice from the JCVI and agree with the approach. Our task now is to roll out this next stage of the vaccination programme out as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

“Wales has a world-leading vaccination programme and I’m grateful to everyone involved in it for the part they have played in making it such a success.”

“I want to encourage everyone to take up their offer of a vaccine to help protect themselves and their loved ones.”

Updated statement from WG on Covishield, Astra Zeneca and EU travel (27.07.21)

We’ve had confirmation this morning that the data migration was successful and that everyone will be able to view their vaccination status online.

English residents can use the NHSE app and Welsh residents will be able to log in via https://covid-status.service.nhsx.nhs.uk/.

This appears to be live for those who have had one or both doses over the border too.

Should you wish to speak to someone about your Travel Certificates please contact: 03003035667

News Story Regarding the Indian Supplied Vaccines and Reported Travel issues to the EU (05.07.21)

“This is completely untrue – no Covishield vaccines have been administered in the UK.

“All AstraZeneca vaccines given in the UK are the same product and appear on the NHS COVID Pass as Vaxzevria. The European Medicines Agency has authorised this vaccine and we’re confident travel will not be affected.

“All doses used in the UK have been subject to rigorous safety and quality checks, including individual batch testing and physical site inspections, by the medicine’s regulator, the MHRA.

“The EU Digital Covid-19 Certificate is currently for EU citizens only, or third country nationals legally staying or resident in the EU. Ensuring safe and open travel with our global partners is a clear priority and we are engaging the European Commission on certification.”

Background

  • The EU and the UK are aligned in the technical approach to certification and aim to ensure that travelling between the UK and the EU27 goes unhindered with a common approach.
  • We cannot comment on individual vaccine supplies due to commercial and security considerations.
  • MHRA confirm all vaccines authorised and deployed in the UK have been subject to rigorous checks, including individual batch testing and site inspections, even where those sites are outside the UK. This data has been shared with the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
  • The NHS COVID Pass is a new product name which refers to the digital version of individuals’ proof of COVID-19 vaccine status which has been available for international travel since May.
  • This can be accessed via the existing NHS App, the downloadable version accessed through NHS.net and the letter which can be requested by calling 119 in England. A paper-based solution is available now for those living in Scotland, Wales and from July in Northern Ireland.
  • We are actively engaging other states on a bilateral basis, and multilaterally through organisations including the International Civil Aviation Organisation and the World Health Organisation to support this work.
  • The UK is well placed to take a global leadership role to ensure a safe and sustainable return to international travel, while managing risks to the UK, by supporting global consistent minimum technical standards for Covid-status certification.
  • We have already made great strides internationally in this regard, including making effective use of our chair of the G7 this year to ensure G7 nations made a commitment to ensure that clinical trial participants will not be disadvantaged in certification processes.

UPDATE 20.05.2021

Updates from the Health Board

COVID-19 Vaccination Programme Update

As of today, a total of 650,919 vaccinations have been administered in North Wales. Over three quarters of adults in North Wales have now received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and we remain on course to offer vaccination to the remaining adult population before the end of July.

This is the largest vaccination programme ever undertaken in the NHS and we simply could not have protected so many people so quickly without the expertise and dedication of our primary care colleagues in GP surgeries, Local Vaccination Centres and community pharmacies.

Last week the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) changed their guidance to state that where possible, an alternative to the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine should be offered to 30-39 year-olds as a precautionary measure, because of the extremely small risk of blood clots occurring in this age group.

As a result, those aged 18-39 will now receive the Pfizer vaccine, and those aged over 40 will receive the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.

This short notice change unavoidably led to a number of appointments being cancelled last week, which have since been rearranged. We do not expect this change in guidance to delay the overall delivery of the vaccination programme in North Wales and we apologise for any inconvenience this caused to those both due to receive and deliver those vaccines last week.

Everyone who has already had a first dose of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine should be reassured that it is safe to receive a second dose of the same brand, irrespective of age, in line with JCVI advice. Medical exemptions may apply to a very small minority.

It is not possible for individuals to choose which brand of first or second dose vaccine they receive. In line with the latest guidance from the JCVI and MHRA, those aged 18-39 will receive the Pfizer vaccine, and those aged over 40 will receive the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.

Second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine must be the same brand as the first dose, unless there is a clear clinical need for an alternative.

There is no current clinical evidence of blood clotting occurring following second doses of any COVID-19 vaccine. Therefore, only those with specific clinical risk factors will be offered an alternative second dose vaccine.

We would encourage people to still attend their appointment they have any concerns about the vaccine, so we can take the time to discuss these with them before they make a decision on whether or not to go ahead with vaccination.

In order to avoid wasting any vaccines because people have not turned up for appointments, from time to time we may offer short notice appointments to people in certain age groups on a first come first served basis.

In addition, there may be occasions where we invite people in certain age groups to book an appointment directly with us.

Where these appointments become available, they will be publicised on our social media accounts and shared with the local media, where possible.

You can find information on the North Wales COVID-19 Vaccination Programme, including answers to Frequently Asked Questions and how to let us know if you need a new or first appointment, on the BCUHB website here: Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (website) – COVID-19 Vaccination Information

We appreciate your patience while we continue to deliver the vaccination programme as well as delivering your usual GP services.
